Why New Zealand?

Why New Zealand?
New Zealand, the country which was the first in the world to give women the right to vote, has traditionally always been in favour of equality among all, in terms of rights and opportunities. Located 1600 kms. southeast of Australia, New Zealand encourages full fee paying students from overseas to study in their well equipped Universities / Colleges.

New Zealand has 7 universities, the oldest one being the University of Otago. Each of these 7 Universities are funded by the State and follow the British system of education. Students from New Zealand educational institutions are easily accepted for further studies in the U. K., U. S. A. etc. and also for jobs in most countries of the world.

The Academic year in New Zealand begins in March with a long break from November to February. Some of the degrees, one can obtain are as follows :
Bachelors Degree 3 years duration Honours Degree 4 years duration Masters Degree 2 years after Bachelors & 1 year after Honours PG Diploma 1 year duration Ph.D. At least 3 years duration

A variety of subjects of study are offered at all the universities though some specialise in particular streams. For example :

University of Auckland - Law, Engineering, Medicine, Architecture & Fine Arts

University of Lincoln - Agriculture & Horticulture
University of Otago - Paramedical courses like Pharmacy, Physiotherapy & Dentistry

Students must complete all inquiries about these universities by September if they want to join from March in the following year. Overseas students are required to produce TOEFL or IELTS Scores as evidence about their competence in English. (about 500 marks in TOEFL and a score of at least 6 in the IELTS)

A CBSE or ISC (or any other equivalent) Indian education level is acceptable for a Bachelors course but each university has its own entry criteria which must be obtained separately from the university concerned. In some cases an acceptable SAT score may also be required.

To give you a general idea about the expenses involved an under graduate course in New Zealand may cost anywhere from $10,000 $20,000 (New Zealand $) per annum depending on the course i.e. whether you are going to study Law or Engineering or Social Sciences. A post graduate courses can cost between $10,000 to $30,000 per annum again depending on the type of course undertaken.

Requirements
Obtaining a university education in New Zealand has similarity more to the British system of education. There are eight state funded universities and also plenty plenty of polytechnics, colleges of education and English language education institutes, as well as private tertiary education providers.

The specific requirements of the universities are well described on their websites.
Most universities offer facilities such as libraries, restaurants, computer laboratories, health and counselling centres, student academic program, student job search, sport and recreational facilities, residential accommodation, even airport meetings.

All the higher education institutions in New Zealand run on their own entry criteria, therefore it would be worthwhile to contact the institution directly for their rules and regulations. Here are some of the basic requirements for admission into the Universities (the other 3 types of institutions have similar requirements) :

Candidates need to submit academic record of CBSE or Indian School Certificate - This is generally taken to be equivalent to the school system in New Zealand. A list of any pre-requisites that are needed will be sent to the student.

International students may also fulfill the admission requirement with the International Baccalaureate exam results or the A level exams. The International Baccalaureate exam was mentioned in the 'Studying in Canada' section. This IB is a two-year programme can be taken in the last 2 years of school. Taught in about 60 countries at 500 schools, this gives a type of universal tutorial to students intending to pursue higher education in other countries.
